I’m running to represent you in the Marrickville-Midjuburi Ward because I love where we live and because we need new progressive voices to make our council work better and work for everyone. – Mat Howard
I live, work and am raising my family here in Marrickville and am passionate about our local environment, parks, businesses and our arts and creative industries.
Our council should get the basics right and also show the way on social justice, climate and renewables, multiculturalism and diversity, fair and transparent planning and arts and culture.
I worked for over ten years in the not-for-profit arts sector, running arts education companies in Australia and overseas. I have a Master of Politics and Policy and served for a number of years as the Chair of Rainbow Families, the peak organisation supporting LGBTQ+ parents and their children in NSW. In that role, I founded the annual Family Pride picnic, led the development of the Love Makes a Family Report to the NSW Government and helped drive the organisation’s campaign on marriage equality.
Key policies and ideas
- Labor will increase the frequency of street cleaning and verge mowing, nurture our public libraries and support local businesses as we emerge from COVID lockdown.
- I’ll expand food recycling to every household, helping residents reduce waste and emissions.
- Our council-run child care services are world-class. I’ll fight for them, build an accessible playground in our ward, and introduce walking buses and wayfinding to improve safety around our schools.
- Labor will expand solar and electric vehicle charging, plant more trees and protect the Cooks River. I’ll introduce a free service to help residents assess their home’s energy efficiency, reduce their climate footprint and save money on energy and utility costs.
- Our local arts and creative industries are the heart and soul of our community. I’ll expand the Perfect Match program, support live music and expand outdoor dining in our suburbs.
- Our planning system should be fair and transparent, promote design excellence, protect heritage and industrial lands, as well as grow affordable and key worker housing.
